Learn Affiliate Marketing Basics
Many people find it’s difficult to make money through affiliate marketing because they never learn the basics of affiliate marketing. They setup a website, slap in a couple of links and eagerly wait of the money to flow in. But, after a few months not getting any result from the website, they conclude that affiliate marketing is tough and give up. The truth is affiliate marketing is not tough; in fact it’s very easy. However, you must be willing to learn the basics and do the right things.
Here are some activities that you must learn in order to succeed in affiliate marketing:
Niche Research
Niche research is the first step you must learn towards successful affiliate marketing. Basically, niche research is the gathering of information regarding a specific market and affiliate product you want to focus on. With the collected information, you can determine how profitable a particular niche is and whether you want to start an affiliate website for that niche.

When you join some affiliate networks, they will provide you information on how good a product is doing on their network; this will save you a lot of time in this area. However, you still need to do some research yourself. Never spend money to get a niche research done for you, many experience affiliates do their own research and are always happy to share with you how they do it. One popular method is to use Google Search Engine, type in the common phrases from your market and analyze the result.
Keyword Research
Keyword research is finding the words or phrases that your target audiences are typing into the search engine. Your objective is to build a good keyword list. In most cases, your keyword list will determine your website’s content and advertising campaign. A good keyword research will almost guarantee your success, whereas no keyword list or a bad one will definitely leads to failure.
This is why online keyword research tools are so popular among internet marketers and why they charge a high fee for you to join. However, if you are just starting out with affiliate marketing or have limited budget, you can use free online keywords tools, like Google Adwords Keyword Tool and Free Wordtracker Keyword Tool. Although these free tools have some limitation, I find them as good and as effective as many paid ones.
Website Monetization
Monetizing your website is a basic task in internet marketing, yet many internet marketers still make mistakes in this aspect. In general term, monetization is a way of laying out your web pages so that you can make the most money out of your site. In the case of affiliate marketing, you must design your web pages to focus on your affiliate products and nothing else. This is because you want your visitors to see and buy your recommendation; and not get distracted to do other things.
There are different ways to monetize your web pages. You can use standard square ads, conventional banner ads and the old, but effective, hyperlinks. You can put all these into your web pages to monetize them. Another common form of ad is AdSense, but I don’t recommend you to use it for affiliate marketing as it can distract your visitors.
Traffic Generation
The most important thing to learn about affiliate marketing is traffic generation. Traffic generation is basically attracting people to your website. The more traffic you have, the more sales you are going to make.
There are many ways to get traffic to your website, but the most popular methods are these 3:
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - This is using various free methods to get your web pages to the first page of search engines. Although this is free, it requires a lot of time and effect before your web pages can reach the first page.
Pay Per Click (PPC) - Another method is to pay your way to the top of search engines. Although this is fast, it requires some money up front and if you are not careful, you can end up wasting money rather than earning money.
Social Network (Web 2.0) – This is using social networking sites, like Forums, Facebook or Twitter to get targeted traffic to your website. Although this method can be effective, many social networking sites don’t allow affiliates to promote their products there.
These are some of the basics of affiliate marketing. If you are new to affiliate marketing, you may find it difficult to understand these basic activities and how they can contribute to your success in affiliate marketing. But, as you learn and master these techniques, they will become clearer and more sense to you. Success with affiliate marketing is easy, once you learn these basics and techniques.
